Reports from Geisei Observatory <September 20, 2009>

29P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 1, 64P/Swift-Gehrels, and 54P/de Vico-Swift-NEAT

29P is the famous comet Schwassmann-Wachmann 1. It is in Gemini in the morning sky and brightening. A small round image at the center of the photograph below is the comet with the coma 10" in diameter. The photographic magnitude is 12. The GSC magnitude of the bright star right above it is 10.1 and the visual estimate of the comet's magnitude will be about 11.
64P is the comet Swift-Gehrels, which was discovered a century ago. Though faint, it is still visible. This comet is also seen low in the eastern sky in the morning.
54P is the comet de Vico-Swift-NEAT. Comet de Vico, which had been discovered in 1844, was rediscovered by Swift in 1894 and named de Vico-Swift. Since then there had been no observation of this comet until it was found in 1965. Then, it disappeared again and no observation had been made since. However, Mr. Kenji Muraoka suggested that P/2002 T4 discovered by NEAT in 2002 is identical with de Vico-Swift. As a result, it was renamed de Vico-Swift. I found old observations made in 2002 with the 60cm reflector and made measurements again, which subsequently have been checked for residuals by Mr. Hirohisa Sato. The image in the photographs was very faint and poor, far from perfect.
