Reports from Geisei Observatory<October 5, 2002>

• 46P/Wirtanen is on the rise
Visually observed in a 21cm telescope it has a coma glowing at magnitude 8.5 and its diameter is 3'. The following are positional measurements by the 21cm Epsilon telescope:
2002 UT         R.A  (2000)      Decl.       m1
Oct. 4.82188   10 25 24.45    +15 04 15.2
     4.82431   10 25 24.93    +15 04 13.1    9.1

C/2002 O4 (Hoenig) has set behind the forest in the northeast and C/2002 O6 (SWAN) was not captured with a 6-minute exposure probably because orbital elements used were out of date. Or did it break up?

The periodic comet Wirtanen is visible near Regulus in Leo in the morning. Searchers should have this comet in mind while sweeping the sky.
