5月17日のLINEAR計画によりてんびん座に16.7等の小惑星状天体として発見 され（G.V.Williams により発見前の4月30日におけるLINEARの観測と同定）、 直ちにNEO Confirmation Pageに公表された。 5月27.0日UT、Klet天文台で捉えたCCDによる観測では少し拡散した8″の コマがあり、5月27.3日のMt. Graham において、1.8-m ｆ/1 Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope(VATT Lennon telescope)で得たRバンドによる300秒 の露出で強い集光した12″のコマとP.A.210°に13″の尾があることがわかっ た。 発見位置は次のとおり、 2001 UT R.A.
