K. J. Lawrence, E. F. HelinとS. H. Pravdo (JPL)は、8月28日、NEATプログラム でPalomar 1.2-m Schmidt望遠鏡より得たCCD画像から、おひつじ座に17.3等の彗星を 発見した。視直径6" の集光した核と南西に向かって100"の尾がある。 直ちにNEO Confirmation Pageに掲載されたが、T. B. Spahr (小惑星センター)は、 LINEARプログラムによって8月17日核光度18.6-19.4等の小惑星状天体と同定した。 他のCCD画像による観測報告がある；Klet天文台(0.57-m 反射)では、8月29.04日UT、 m1 = 16.0, P.A.237°に50"以上の尾、Ondrejov(0.65-m 反射)では、29.05日、小さな コマと、少なくとも40"の尾、Modra(0.6-m 反射)では、29.08、拡散状、Powell天文台 (0.75-m 反射)では、29.30日、P.A.243°に40"の尾、Dominion 天体物理天文台 (1.82-m Plaskett望遠鏡)では、29.38日、かなり集光したコマとP.A.246°に2’の尾、 McDonald天文台(0.76-m 反射)では、29.43日、m1 = 16.9, P.A.240°に 約70"の尾がある。 発見位置は次のとおり、 2001 UT R.A.
