Reports from Geisei Observatory <August 14, 2009>

199P/Shoemaker 4 and 22P/Kopff

These are the observations of periodic comets. On August 13, the sky transparency was high and the stars were visible low in the sky.
199P/Shoemaker 4 is moving south extremely low in the sky, as far south as -41 degrees in declination. The 70cm telescope captured this comet, but it was so low that the telescope was almost parallel to the sea to the south.
22P/Kopff is bright enough to be visually observed. The coma is not so large, but the tail appears to trail to the south in a photograph taken by the 70cm telescope. For this photograph, much-loved hyper-sensitized 2415 film was brought back into life.
