Reports from Geisei Observatory <July 27, 2007>

17P/Holmes, 177P/Barnard 2, 4P/Faye, and C/2007 O1 (LINEAR)

These are the recent observations made at Geisei. In summer time we are very busy every day having many visitors to the observatory.

There isn't any noteworthy comet apart from C/2006 VZ13 (LINEAR), which is relatively bright at 8th magnitude in the evening sky.

It is about time that a great comet appeared without warning. In late July, 1955, Comet Honda was discovered in Eridanus near Orion and brightened to 5.5 magnitude in August. Someone announced the prediction that the comet would brighten to minus magnitudes and caused a sensation. Many comets have been discovered in the early morning skies in summer.
