C/2007 E1 (Garradd) and C/2007 E2 (Lovejoy)
Because of the heavy "yellow sand" dust, the sky
has been hazy in recent days, even though weather has been fair. City lights
are more strongly reflected on the dust haze making the sky brighter.
The following objects were relatively bright and I somehow
managed to observe them. I may have estimated the magnitude of C/2007 E2
(Lovejoy) brighter than it really was, as the comet was very low on the
horizon. When observing under these unfavorable conditions, fuzzy nebula-like
objects tend to be estimated fainter compared with stars. One-third of
the field of view in the 60cm reflector was blocked by the horizon when
the comet was photographed.
The proper motion of C/2007 E1 (Garradd) was large and it
trailed even by a 3-minute exposure. Film-based photography requires guiding
by the Metcalf method.
