Comet Kohoutek was discovered in Germany in 1973 as a faint object. In
January the following year, it dominated the western sky with a beautiful
seven-degree-long tail. It is well-known that the U.S. astronauts watched
this comet from the windows of their spacecraft. This photo was taken on
January 5, 1974, by a 21cm reflector at the newly-built Geisei Observatory.
The coma was visible to the naked-eye as a third-magnitude object. |
